Darren Bennett is truly an American success story. After securing a tryout with the San Diego Chargers in 1993 while on his honeymoon from Australia , he went on to break most of the team's punting records during his 11 years with the team. After spending 2004-05 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, being named to 2 Pro Bowls, The 1996 all Madden Team and the NFL Team of the Decade for the 90's ,The Bennett Family retired to Carlsbad , California to enjoy the sun and look for a new challenge.
His business background is also not the usual road traveled by an NFL player . Graduating from high school in 1982 ,Darren was already playing Australian Rules football professionally while still studying , moving to run the family nursery business in Perth ,Western Australia for 6 years. In 1989 he moved to Melbourne to further his football career where he met his wife Rosemary and worked as an employment counselor for 5 years. He retired from Australian Rules football in 1993 after 12 seasons to follow his dream of playing in the NFL.
Rosemary's business background is more than 12 years in the dental industry as a dental assistant and a professional product representative for Colgate in Australia . This experience will provide a good base for development of our salon and styling products.
Darren has been involved with Athleticuts since the planning stage when Dr. JJ Heavilin would bounce ideas off him during chiropractic sessions about a sports themed haircut concept he was developing. Excited about the idea Darren always thought he would buy a franchise when it was time. After investigating other options in the field of Sports Hair chains, the opportunity to acquire Athleticuts outright came in late 2007.
Darren's Australian family values carry over into the business...
"Our dream is to provide the best Sports/Video game hair experience" and to allow our employees to progress through to owning a salon if they wish to .. The Athleticuts team is one of the strongest in the industry with strong hair /business/franchise development training and family values that I learned from some of Australia's great pioneering families. We hope this will provide a welcoming environment for customers and staff as a family. We'll do this while staying as close to the original concept that Dr JJ and Lori Heavilin began in 2003.
